Bardin DNA report

I can't believe we got the DNA results back after only 3 weeks.  It is so exciting to find out more information about our family, but I guess I thought they would be able to narrow the results down to a very specific country.

The results are - Haplogroup R1b1b2a1a2f

This haplogroup comes from the region of Europe, population : Irish, Basques, British, French.  The R1b1b2 is the most common haplogroup in western Europe.

The question of Native American Ancestry was not what I expected either.  The report states - Recent Native American ancestry is unlikely.  Though this Ancestry Painting suggests fully European ancestry, it does not rule out the possibility of a Native American ancestor more than five generations ago.  Interpretation - this Y chromosome haplogroup is inconsistent with Native American ancestry along the paternal (father's father's father's...) line.

I hope to keep learning what all of this means to our family history.  I will keep you posted.

A Picture is Worth a 1000 Words

Isn't that how the saying goes?

Family - I need your help in the picture department.  The family genealogy is lacking because I don't have photos of everyone.  Please look through your pictures and send me your best ones please.  I would like to add them to my genealogy file.  Family history can get really boring without faces to put to the names and dates.  Don't worry, I will not be publishing everyones mug shots on the internet.  I decided right up front that I was only going to publish information about our dead relatives.  (Anyway, my sister says I would rather spend my time with the dead relatives that the live ones.  I told her it is because they don't talk back.)

You can send them to my e-mail address - rootsmom@aol.com.  Just add "Genealogy Photos" in the regarding line please.  Pass the word to your brother's and sister's, Mom's and Dad's, etc.  I appreciate any help I can get with this project.

Love to all!

John Wayne Bardin

John Wayne Bardin

John Wayne was born on  18 January 1939 in Henryetta, Okmulgee, Oklahoma to James Bardin and Bonnie Alene Wakefield.  He died on 19 September 1978 in Salt Lake City, Salt Lake, Utah from acute coronary insufficiency.  He was buried at Sunset Gardens Cemetery in Sandy, Salt Lake, Utah.

When I started my genealogy efforts 13 years ago, I learned that several people listed Dad's cause of death as suicide.  Well, needless to say, I was quite upset over this.  I assume that these people made their conclusion from his original death certificate because it stated that he was found on 19 September 1978 with cause of death listed as pending toxicology.  In 2001 I requested a copy of the death certificate to see if they had made a final conclusion of cause of death and came to find out there was a second page to the certificate which stated the cause of death was acute coronary insufficiency.  I went on a crusade to write emails and posts to let everyone know that Dad did not commit suicide.  Regardless, he died way too young.

John married Leona Kay Elmer on 3 May 1957 in Payson, Utah, Utah.  They later divorced.  John and Kay were blessed with 3 children:
     Kathalene JoAnn (Kathy - me)
     Gregory John (Greg)
     Cynthia Lynn (Cindy)

Some of my best memories were when we went on vacations.  Whenever we went on trips, we usually left as soon as Dad got off work and then we would drive all night.  When it got dark everyone would fall asleep and I would stay awake to talk to him while he drove.  I always liked that time because I got Dad to myself.  We would talk about all kinds of fun things.

The summer before he died, Dad and I went to Las Vegas on his motorcycle to see Grandpa and Grandma Bardin.  As usual we left after he got off work.  It was back in the days when the speed limit was only 55 and it got to the point that we were stopping about every 30 minutes because our butts were so sore from the ride.  Boy, did we have fun though!!

Copies of birth, death and marriage certificate in my possession.

DNA Testing

I just ordered a DNA test from 23andme.com.  My brother, Greg, is going to take the test for me so we can follow the Bardin line back.  I have not been able to get further back than the 1750's in North Carolina.  It will be great to determine where our family came from and if we have any Indian blood in the last 5 generations.

Stay tuned!

John Pink Bardin and Jettie Viola Dudley

John Pink Bardin and Jettie Viola Dudley - Great-Grandparents
John Pink Bardin is the son of John Stewart Bardin and Millie Ann Mullins.  He was born the 22 November 1881 in Gainesville, Cooke, Texas.  He died 10 June 1960 in Henryetta, Okmulgee, Oklahoma of coronary thrombosis.  John Pink is buried at Westlawn Cemetery in Henryetta, Okmulgee, Oklahoma.

Jettie Viola Dudley is the daughter of Ray Patrick Dudley and Nancy Jane Redman.  She was born 26 May 1888 in Farmerville, Hunt, Texas.  She died 12 November 1953 in Henryetta, Okmulgee, Oklahoma of coronary occlusion.  Jettie Viola is buried at Westlawn Cemetery in Henryetta, Okmulgee, Oklahoma.

John Pink and Jettie Viola were married 18 April 1904 in Indian Territory (Jesse, Pontotoc, Oklahoma).  They were blessed with 12 children - Anna Mae, James (my Grandpa), Albert, John Ray, Vesta, Omie T. Floyd, Virgil, Pinkie Ola, Leonard Leon, JV, Betty Jane and Roy Vone.  Amazingly, 11 children lived to adulthood.  As of 2010 - all of the children have now passed on.

Albert Bardin was born 9 December 1907 in Wapanucka, Johnston, Oklahoma.  He died 10 July 10, 1909 in Wapanucka, Johnston, Oklahoma of dysentery.  Albert is buried at Rose Hill Cemetery in Wapanucka, Johnston, Oklahoma.  He is buried next to his great-grandmother, Sarah Ann Mullins and 2nd great-grandmother, Margaret Baker.

John Ray Bardin was born 4 May 1909 in Wapanucka, Johnston, Oklahom.  He died 14 August 1958 in Albuquerque, Santa Fe, New Mexico in an automobile accident.  Johnny Ray never married.

Each of the other children I'll discuss with their spouses over time.

Unfortunately, I didn't know my great-grandparents since I was born the year after John Pink died.  I'm hoping that maybe through this blog I can get some responses to - What were John Pink and Jettie Viola like, what are some of your memories of them?  I would like to hear your comments so we can build a story around our family rather than just the facts.

Would love to hear from my family - best wishes to all!
